The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is an autonomous body established under the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Government of India. FSSAI is responsible for protecting and promoting public health through the regulation and supervision of food safety.
FSSAI certification is mandatory for all Food Business Operators (FBOs) in India, including manufacturers, processors, retailers, distributors, importers, and transporters. The certification ensures that food products meet the safety standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

FSSAI Certification is a mandatory license issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India for all food business operators in the country. It ensures that food products manufactured, stored, distributed, or sold comply with the food safety standards laid down under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The FSSAI license or registration demonstrates that the food business operator follows proper hygiene and safety practices in their operations. It builds consumer trust and ensures that food products are safe for consumption. FSSAI certification is categorized into three types based on the scale and nature of the food business: Basic Registration, State License, and Central License.
These are the primary objectives of FSSAI Certification:
Ensure safe and wholesome food for human consumption
Lay down science-based standards for food products
Regulate the manufacture, storage, distribution, sale, and import of food articles
Facilitate food safety and create consumer awareness
Prevent fraudulent and deceptive practices in food business
The benefits of obtaining FSSAI Certification include:
Identify whether your business requires Basic Registration, State License, or Central License based on annual turnover and business activities.
Collect and prepare all required documents including identity proof, address proof, business registration documents, and food safety management plan.
Submit the completed application form (Form-B) along with all required documents through the FOSCOS portal.
The FSSAI authority reviews the application and may conduct an inspection of the premises if required.
Upon satisfactory review and inspection, the FSSAI license is issued with a unique 14-digit registration/license number.
FSSAI license/registration is valid for 1 to 5 years as chosen by the applicant at the time of application. The license can be renewed within 30 days before its expiry date.
License renewal application should be submitted at least 30 days before expiry. Late renewal may attract a penalty fee of ₹100 per day after expiry.
Any changes in business details require modification of the FSSAI license. This includes change in address, ownership, or product categories.
FSSAI certification is not just a legal requirement but a mark of quality and safety for food businesses in India. It ensures that food products meet the prescribed safety standards and builds consumer confidence. With different categories of licenses catering to various business sizes and types, FSSAI provides a comprehensive framework for food safety regulation. Obtaining and maintaining FSSAI certification is crucial for any food business operator looking to establish credibility, ensure compliance, and contribute to the nation's food safety ecosystem.
